Prenatal Massage; Myth vs Truth

There are many myths around prenatal massage. Here I am going to address the three most common myths that I have heard.
"𝐍𝐨 𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫" or that it is "unsafe"?

This one is mostly a myth. However, if you have a history of high risk pregnancies, or feel uncertain, you’re going to want to get the “ok” from your prenatal care provider.
Massage is completely safe during the first trimester! In fact, you've probably already had a massage during your first trimester since people don't usually know that they are pregnant until they're about halfway through that first 3 months!
So, go ahead, get on the massage table! One benefit is that massage can help reduce nausea! 😉 Now what do you think about that!?
"Having your feet massaged while pregnant will induce labor...."

Hold the lotion!
This is mostly a myth. While there are reflexology points in your feet and ankles, those points take a whole lot more than a massage to stimulate.
Of course, I'm not going to do any kind of trigger point treatment or sustained pressure on any one point. However, the feet should not be ignored, especially while pregnant.
You think your hips are taking on a lot of weight?! Let's think about the weight your poor feet are carrying around!
“You can’t get your legs massaged during pregnancy…”

Blood volume increases with pregnancy, slowing blood flow in your legs. This increases the risk of blood clots. However, this does not mean you cannot get your legs massaged.
The anterior (front) and medial (inside) of the leg should be massaged with a lighter pressure. The major arteries of the leg run anteriorly and medially. So, care should be taken when working on these areas of the leg. The posterior (back) and lateral (outside) area of your leg can be worked deeper.
Your hips will thank you for it.
As an advanced trained Prenatal Massage Therapist, I know the precautions that need to be taken for massage to be perfectly safe for my pregnant clients. Your safety and comfort are my top priority! So, you can be sure that you are seeing the very best massage therapist for you and your baby.
